What is the NDIS?
The NDIS is the new way of providing disability support. It will help people with disability achieve their goals. This may include greater independence, community involvement, employment and improved well-being. As an insurance scheme, the NDIS takes a lifetime approach investing with people with disability early to improve their outcomes later in life.
Can I access the NDIS?
To become a NDIS participant, a person must:
– Have a permanent disability that significantly affects their ability to take part in everyday activities.
– Be aged less than 65 when they first enter the NDIS.
– Be an Australian citizen or hold a permanent visa or a Protected Special Category visa; and
– Live in Australia where the NDIS is available.
When will the NDIS be available in my area?
The NDIS is gradually being rolled out in Victoria over a three year period between July 2016 and July 2019.The NDIS in Victoria began in Barwon in 2013, the North Eastern Melbourne area in 2016 and Central Highlands in 2017. By the time the NDIS is fully operational, around 105000 people in Victoria are expected to receive support.
